Abstract
The purpose of this study was to investigate the Health-Deviation Self-Care by measuring the Sick role behavior, Needs for Support from family and health professionals in performing Health-Deviation Self-Care, and Needs for Education for performing Health-Deviation Self-Care in CRF patients receiving continuous ambulatory peritoneal dialysis (CAPD).
The measuring tools for this study were developed by researchers from the literatures, with consultation with 4 CAPD specialists and pilot study with 5 patients. The tools were all self-report questionnaires.
The subjects of this study were 100 CAPD patients in a general hospital. Data were collected by interviewing the patient by trained nurses from May 25, 1988 to July 2, 1988 and analyzed with SPSS.
The results were as follows
1. Reliability of the tools
The reliability alphas of the each tools for measuring Health-Deviation Self-Care, Needs for Support and Needs for Education were 0.86986, 0.86174 and 0.91416.
2. The incidence of peritonitis was 1/7.2 patient months.
3. The mean of Health-Deviation Self-Care was 62.00 and there was no significant difference in Health-Deviation Self-Care by general characteristics.
4. The mean of Needs for Support from family and health professionals in performing Health-Deviation Self-Care was 34.10 and there were significant differences in Needs for Support between male and female patients (t= 3.27 p= 0.002) and between ones having plan of renal transplantation and others (t= -2.36, p= 0.023).
5. The mean of Needs for Education for performing Health-Deviation Self-Care was 74.87 and there was a significant difference in Needs for Education between ones having plan of renal transplantation and others. (t= 2.05, p= 0.044).
6. There were significant correlation between Health-Deviation Self-Care and Needs for Education (r= 0.659, p= 0.000) and negative correlation between Needs for Education and Needs for Support (r= -0.227, p= 0.043).
